Channel
4 recently had a mini Bruce Robinson festival, where they
screened Bruce's films and two documentaries, one called,
'The Peculiar World of Bruce Robinson', the other
'Withnail and Us'. Both documentaries were obviously
filmed at the same time, as Richard E. Grant's interview
footage was shot in the same arm chair and the same
snippets of Withnail & I were shown, but 'The
Peculiar World of Bruce Robinson' is great in that it
shows Bruce at home writing and creating. It also looks
at every film he's written and talks to the directors and
procduers and tells of the problems he's had with his
creative vision always being compromised and this is why
he likes to direct the film himself, or more recently,
turn to books. He cited 'The Peculiar World of Thomas
Penman' as his favourite work to date because it's
totally his creation. He's able to put his vision onto
paper and that's what the audience sees.
