Channel
4 recently had a mini Bruce Robinson festival, where they
screened Bruce's films and two documentaries, one called
'Withnail and Us', the other, 'The Peculiar World of
Bruce Robinson'. The Withnail and Us documentary gathered
together the cast and crew of 'Withnail & I', all
except Richard Griffiths, and they talked about their
experiences on the film, and why they thought is had
endured so well for so long. They also spoke to fans of
the film and showed snippets of the most quotable lines,
as well as early student home movies filmed by
Bruce. Bruce
spoke of how the paranoid "I" character is based on him
and his early days in a squalid shared house in London.
The character of Withnail is based on a friend of his
called Vivian, who would rant and rave about what a great
actor he was, but never actually achieved anything. He
also talked about casting the film and as usual, drank
copius amounts of red wine, whilst smoking
continuously. Some
screen shots of Bruce's home movies, showing Bruce with
friends Michael Feast and Vivian MacKerrell aka the REAL
Withnail.
